Inside the Abyss Explorer, it was dark and quiet, except for the hum of the life support systems and the communication static. The viewports were small, thick circles of reinforced glass, offering limited glimpses of the outside world.
As the submersible began its descent, the light outside the viewports gradually faded, transitioning from the bright blue of the surface layers to a darker, inky blue, then finally to complete blackness.
We were in the midnight zone, a realm of perpetual darkness and unimaginable pressure.
The sensors on the submersible were picking up readings – temperature, pressure, salinity, and… unusual energy signatures. The same kind of readings mentioned in the old newspaper article.
The energy signatures were weak at first, but as we descended deeper into the trench, they became stronger and more erratic. They were not consistent with any known geological or biological sources.
Inside the submersible, the mood was one of cautious excitement. This was what the scientists were looking for – anomalies, things that defied explanation.
