The death of the queen of England symbolizes the end of an era. Buckingham Palace issued a statement of the new king on the same day, saying that the Queen's death "is the saddest moment for me and all members of my family... We deeply mourn a deeply loved monarch and mother".

In the evening of that day, royal staff hung obituaries on the railings in front of Buckingham Palace. A large number of people braved the rain to express their condolences, and many people laid flowers outside Windsor Castle.
